Midlands Technical College

General Program Description

The PTA program is a 1 + 1 curriculum design consisting of 29 semester hours of general education in Phase I followed by 42 semester hours in Phase II consisting of technical/professional courses. The technical portion of the program occupies 18 months beginning each August. Students are in class or clinical on a full-time basis. The college employs two full-time faculty members for the program. Students are encouraged to participate in the college-wide commencement held in May of each year.

Clinical Experiences

Each student completes four clinical experiences prior to commencement. These experiences are chosen from a wide variety of clinical sites in Columbia and the surrounding areas. A total of 16 weeks is spent in clinical experiences beginning with 2 weeks in the summer semester and the remainder occurs during the final fall semester after all didactic courses have been completed. FACULTY: There are two full-time faculty members. The maximum faculty to student ratio in lab is 1:10. ENROLLMENT: The physical therapist assistant program accepts a maximum of 20 students per year into Phase II of the program. ADMISSION: Admission to the Phase I (pre-PTA) portion of the curriculum requires admission to the college, satisfactory HOBET V, ACT or SAT scores, and a satisfactory writing sample score or a prior college degree. For acceptance into Phase II, students must additionally perform 20 hours of observations in at least two different physical therapy settings. A one-page impression paper is required after completing the observation hours. A 2.75 or greater cumulative grade point average in Phase I (general education core) is necessary to progress to Phase II (technical/professional core). The curriculum display is available upon request and on the program’s website. Transfer students are accepted into Phase I. A maximum of twenty students are accepted into Phase II each year, chosen from the list of qualified students who have completed all requirements for Phase II and have submitted an application to the PTA Program. Faculty

There are two full-time faculty members. The maximum faculty to student ratio is 1:10 for laboratory experiences in Phase II of the PTA Program.

Outcomes

Approximately 64% of admitted students graduate from the program (3-year average). The ultimate pass rate for the licensure exam is 100% for the last six out of seven years. Those program graduates responding to surveys are employed.

Tuition, fees and financial aid

Tuition for Phase II during the 2012-2013 academic year (four semesters) ranges from $7,152.00 – $21,456.00 depending on student residency. Books, professional fees, physical and misc.expenses are approximately $3,450.00. The approximate total cost for Phase II of the program is $10,856.00 – $25,735.00 depending on residency. Midlands Technical College is a non-residential college. Many students in the PTA program apply for and receive financial assistance through the college Student Financial Services office.

Student life

Midlands Technical College is a state supported technical college serving the Midlands of South Carolina. It is a multi-campus, non-residential state supplemented technical college in the greater Columbia area. The PTA program students have access to a variety of student services including Counseling Services and the Academic Success Center. Most students reside in Columbia or neighboring areas and are well aware of the multiple recreational, cultural, and historical opportunities located in this area.
